FAQ
How long has St. Louis Skylights been in business?
We have been in business since 1989 and install more skylights every year than any other St. Louis area company.
What products and services do you offer?
We provide daylighting solutions by offering a wide variety of skylights for both residential and commercial applications. Our primary partner, Velux, has been the world leader in skylight design for over 65 years. However, we offer installation services for skylights from other manufacturers for applications outside of the Velux product line.
Do you offer other services in addition to skylights?
We specialize in installing and repairing skylights as well as solar attic fans and sun tunnels.
What is your relationship with Velux?
St. Louis Skylights is a Velux 5 Star Skylight Specialist, trained and certified by Velux to install the full portfolio of Velux’ residential and commercial products. As the Velux Solutions Service Provider for St. Louis, we are the only local company authorized by Velux to do warranty work on Velux skylights.
Do you repair or install skylights by other companies?
We only repair Velux skylights. However, we replace more non-Velux skylights (acrylic bubble or glass skylights) with new Velux skylights than any other local company. We also offer custom skylight replacements.
What is the difference between selecting your company compared to another contractor to install my skylights?
Unlike other companies, we specialize in skylights only. Whenever you’re dealing with a hole in the roof, we believe that it deserves hiring the most qualified company. We have the most experienced carpentry crews, some of whom have been working for St. Louis Skylights for over 14 years. No other company offers our detailed knowledge of skylight specifications and the applicable installation techniques. Plus we offer the best labor guarantee.
What is your guarantee on your labor?
We provide an exclusive 15 year guarantee on our labor with Velux skylights, significantly more than other installation companies. This means St. Louis Skylights guarantees against leaks for 15 years due to their workmanship. This is in addition to the Velux product warranties.
Does St. Louis Skylights work with contractors?
Absolutely. In fact, most of our business is from referrals from contractors, roofers, interior designers, and architects.
Will you supply me with several references, if requested?
Yes. We have a long list of satisfied customers, many of whom would be glad to tell you about our company.
Does your company carry insurance?
St. Louis Skylights carries liability and workers’ compensation insurance. A copy of our Certificate of Insurance can be sent directly to the homeowner or their association upon request.
Is St. Louis Skylights a member of the Better Business Bureau?
We encourage you to check on our record with the local BBB office by visiting www.bbb.org/stlouis. We currently have an A+ rating with the local BBB.
I’ve always heard that skylights always leak. Do they?
The old, acrylic dome skylights that are prevalent in the St. Louis area were commercial grade skylights not intended for residential use, with a life expectancy of 10 years. There are also many aged flat glass skylights in St. Louis from other manufacturers that are no longer in business. Both the acrylic dome and older flat glass skylights have an increased likelihood of leaking, either due to their age, their design, or improper installation or maintenance. St. Louis Skylights replaces these old, inefficient skylights with new Velux skylights with low-E coated, argon gas filled glazings that are guaranteed not to leak for a minimum of 10 years.
Will new Velux skylights heat up my home like my current acrylic domes?
No. All Velux skylights are Energy Star rated, with argon gas filled glazings that block out the majority of the passive infrared heat. Most acrylic dome skylights have no heat protection. New Velux skylights also include Low-E glass that blocks out most of the ultraviolet rays that fades out flooring and fabrics.
What are my choices for either replacement skylights or a new skylight installation?
Many choices are available, including fixed and ventilating skylights, with or without blinds or shades.
How much does it cost to replace an existing acrylic or glass skylight?
The replacement cost for a fixed curb-mounted skylight that is not leaking will be from $900 to $2,500. A simple replacement does not include any new flashing. If the existing fixed skylight is leaking, we would recommend a retrofit, which includes a skylight replacement as well as new flashing. A retrofit for a fixed curb-mounted skylight will be from $1,650 to $3,300. Prices will be higher if a ventilating skylight or a window shade or blind is requested. Prices will also vary for custom-size skylights.
What does it cost for a new skylight installation?
The price will vary depending upon the skylight size, fixed or ventilating, and whether the ceiling is flat or vaulted. The price is further affected depending on the type of new installation that is requested. A full installation includes installing the skylight on the roof and framing, drywalling, and painting the skylight shaft. A “lite” roof only installation excludes the interior framing and finish, with that work done by others. In order to provide a specific price, we offer free on-site inspections of the room, ceiling, and roof structure. Generally, a full installation of a fixed skylight will range from approximately $4,650 to $5,800 with upgrades to a venting skylight adding approximately $900 to $1,200.
What new technologies are available with Velux skylights?
Velux has recently introduced their new “Fresh Air” Solar Skylights. The Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylight features a solar panel that captures any available daylight and uses it to recharge a highly efficient, fully concealed, battery powered operator and control system. The battery powered operator is the power source that opens and closes the skylight and the solar panel serves as the charging source of the system. These skylights are also eligible for a 30% Federal Tax Credit.
I’m interested in tubular skylights. How much are they?
St. Louis Skylights installs more Velux Sun Tunnels than any other local installation company. The installed price will be approximately $1,300 to $1,600 depending on the size (10″ or 14″) and length of rigid tubing needed from the roof deck to the ceiling. The 22″ TCR Sun Tunnels for use in commercial buildings are priced out upon request. All Sun Tunnels include a 5 year product warranty and a 15 year guarantee against leaks.
What is the process for St. Louis Skylights to give me an estimate?
For glass skylights and sun tunnels, we will visit your home or business and provide a free estimate. Simply call us at 636-536-2000 to make an appointment or to receive a consultation. Please note than any appointment over 1.5 hours from our office will be charged a service fee of $350. This will be credited toward the cost of your installation.
After I agree to have skylights installed, how long before they will be installed?
Generally, we will install your skylights within 8-12 weeks after an approved agreement.
